BIG IDEA
Differences
by Brian Johnson

Are you capable of seeing and appreciating differences in the world?

If someone has a different perspective than you, do you honor that perspective or do you automatically think they’re a little (or a lot) stupid/wrong/weird?

It’s so easy to see someone wearing the clothes of a different tradition or speaking a different language and, rather than open into the beauty of their differences, respond with a certain distaste.

Yah?

I’ve certainly experienced that.

Or, take an intimate relationship. We’re wearing the same types of clothes, speaking the same language. But, when we have a difference of opinion with a loved one do we HONOR that difference or do we try to convince them we’re right and they’re wrong.

Of course, there are times for challenging dialogues, but can we have them from a place where we truly honor the other’s perspective?

This is an area I trust we can all use a little work on. (I know I am working on it. :))

Are you getting stuck on differences in opinion with someone? Can you step back, see the differences as something to be admired and appreciated and re-enter that relationship with a fresh perspective?

Good.

Let’s have fun playing with, not fighting with differences.
